The eyes, heart and mind witness aging through the petals of seasonal flowers.

Funny Thing Aging

Aging is a funny thing.

Only that day, it seems, I was young and bustling

too busy to breathe in peace, longing to retire

and catch moments to do nothing

but watch the aimless clouds float by.

The wish was granted by the Lord, kind as ever

and now retired,

I have time to sit and stare at the squirrels

bury their nuts, and watch the birds frolicking

here and there

and yet a funny bone inside me

wishes to go back to youth once again

and be the busy bee it was.

Funnier still

when neither youth nor age tethers me

I wish I were a baby

back in my mother’s lap

with not a thing to worry about

for she did it all for me.

Aging, inevitable as it is

makes my heart and mind

bury the life lived so far in the sands of time.
